With the social media campaign #MeToo gaining worldwide momentum, a group of individuals are gaining a greater voice within the movement.
Both women and men with intellectual disabilities are being recognized as facing instances of sexual abuse from caretakers, family members, and others whom the victim trusts.
Compared to individuals without intellectual disabilities, those with developmental disabilities are seven times more likely to become victims of sexual assault.
However, despite the high rates of abuse that impacts those with intellectual disabilities, many are unwilling or unable to share their trauma.
Social leaders are working to expose and end the often continuous sexual abuse faced by those with intellectual disabilities.
