Trump told reporters during his working vacation at the Bedminister, NJ golf club that he was going to “spend a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of money on the opioid crisis,” as reported by NPR.
A report from last month by the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis recommended that Trump declare a national emergency after data indicated deaths caused by overdoses at a rate of 142 per day in the U.S.
He has not yet officially “declared” the opioid crisis a national emergency, but officials say that doing so would help make the issue a priority across the country, and would boost funding efforts to programs that help.
Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur from Ohio said it was a step in the right direction, and that she would remind Trump’s team that Medicaid is a key provider of care for people battling drug addiction.
