Poor sleeping habits have been found to impact individuals who are at risk for certain medical predispositions, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Researchers have discovered that individuals who sleep less than 6 hours per day and have a high body mass index may increase their chances of dying prematurely.
Individuals with no preexisting health conditions are more likely to die if they sleep less than 6 hours nightly compared to those that maintain healthier sleeping schedules.
In general, studies have indicated that individuals who sleep less and suffer from heart disease and diabetes were 2.1 times more likely to die from strokes and heart attacks compared to those without the health conditions.
“Taking care of your sleep and consulting with a clinician if you have insufficient sleep is important if you want to lower your risk of death from heart disease and stroke,” explained Julio Fernandez- Mendoza, assistant professor of psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine.
