The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts has hired a neuroscientist to merge brain science with art.
Dr. Tedi Asher will become the museum’s first neuroscience researcher and will help in transforming how visitors interpret and react to art galleries.
One of Dr. Asher’s main responsibilities will be to create a multi-sensory experience around a specific exhibit by conducting scientific research to elevate and heighten the art.
“All art museums create art experiences– that’s what an exhibition is, that’s what programs are– and all of our experiences are created in our brains,” states the museum’s executive director and CEO Dan Monroe.
He hopes that Dr. Asher’s background in neuroscience and her presence within the Peabody Essex Museum will help to “create experiences of art and culture and creative expression that transform people’s lives by, among other things, helping expand and enrich their perspectives of the world and themselves.”
