The publishings, which focused on residents within California, cited that immigrants could pay even more in taxes upon being granted legal status.

The ITEP found the state of California would receive $3.5 billion in taxes if undocumented individuals became legal citizens.

The findings highlight the importance of immigrants in governmental infrastructures, especially since local and state taxes are also collected from individuals who do not have legal status within the country.

“Just as the horrendous impact of breaking up families under a mass deportation policy should not be ignored, nor should policymakers overlook the significant contribution undocumented immigrants make to our state and local revenues and the economy,” said ITEP director of programs Meg Wiehe.
