According to a study that was published in medical journal JAMA Neurology, “The best long-term care insurance in our country is a conscientious daughter.”
The authors of this study, all of whom are fellows at Stanford University’s Clinical Excellence Research Center, state that dementia patients receive most of their care from unpaid caregivers, the majority of which are women.
Experts have found that although men do care for older family members who are diagnosed with dementia, the burden is not shared equally.
Dr. Clifford C. Sheckter states that over time men have taken on more responsibilities at home, but “it hasn’t been a significant contribution and certainly hasn’t kept pace with women’s increased participation in the work force.”
