The FDA just gave a company approval to sell genetic tests for diseases directly to patients, providing customers with insights on their likelihood of developing certain conditions or rare diseases.
Rather than having to consult a medical professional first, the $199 Ancestry and Health test will allow consumers to receive reports on their likelihood of developing a condition through a simple saliva sample that is submitted directly to the agency.
The FDA’s decision will likely result in more agencies selling directly to consumers, rather than having medical professionals relay information to patients.
The agency, 23andMe will report on markers for 10 diseases, reported New York Times.
