Health officials recently released the largest report on the Zika epidemic and its connection to birth abnormalities.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states that “there have been more than 1,600 cases [of Zika] in pregnant women reported here in the U.S.”
According to Schuchat, there are about 30 to 40 cases of Zika found in pregnant women each week in the U.S.
The majority of women caught the Zika virus in a number of countries within Latin America and the Caribbean, while some were infected in the South Pacific and West Africa.
Among the women who were infected by Zika, 77 reported miscarriages, and 51 infants were born with birth defects, including brain and eye abnormalities.
