One in every four children will reside in areas with limited access to drinking water by 2040, a new report by UNICEF states.
The report “Thirsting for a Future: Water and Children in a Changing Climate” examines the effects of scarce potable water on children’s lives and looks at how climate change will present more obstacles for the poor communities that are most at risk.
Properly treated wastewater could become a source to help lessen the burden on struggling communities by reducing contamination that flows into rivers and oceans.
Currently, only 8% of wastewater is treated in poor countries, while in more affluent countries, about 80% of wastewater is treated against contamination.
“Wastewater is a valuable resource in a world where water is finite and demand is growing,” said Guy Ryder, chair of U.N.-Water and director-general of the International Labor Organization, as reported by Vocativ.
