Currently in the U.S., only 89% of men are employed or looking for work, compared to the 97% in 1957.
In a report released in 2016 from Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, the decrease in workforce participation could be explained by a decrease in good jobs for men with low skills.
However, research suggests that American men are falling out of the workforce as a result of poor health conditions. Conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity have been proven to more harshly impact America’s population of poorly educated adults, which is the same group that is participating less in the workforce.
