A new survey by Jefferies found that the use and demand of 3D Mammography (scanning tool used to detect breast cancer) is growing at 25 hospitals, which might indicate that within the next few years, most hospitals will adopt the new tool.
Compared to 2D scanning, 3D Mammography is more efficient in detecting breast cancer because it produces more images – about 104, compared to only 4 images for 2D – and it scans dense breast tissue more effectively, which is often found in women in color. Using 3D scanning could improve early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Jefferies estimates that by the end of the year, the use of 3D Mammography at hospitals will be at approximately 33 percent, and by 2020 will be at 71 percent.
