Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have penalized ten hospitals in Houston for having high rates of infections or injuries that patients acquired during hospital visits.
In an effort to improve patient visits to hospitals, part of the ACA plan asks hospitals to reduce the number of patients who suffer avoidable infections and injuries within the hospital – such as hip fractures from falling, bed sores, or blood clots. If a hospital does not meet standard, it suffers a one percent decrease in its federal Medicare funds.
Across the country, there were 769 hospitals that suffered the penalty.
Opponents of the penalty argue that the financial hit ironically impedes a hospital’s ability to do better with less money.
