After 13 years, the National Museum of African American History and Culture is set to finally open on September 24, when President Obama will speak at the opening ceremony.
The museum holds over 40,000 objects reflecting the strong, painful and resilient history of African American culture in America – many of the items which were donated by people around the country. The museum began as a collection of heirloom donations from people’s own closets and attics, and now will be on display for thousands of visitors.
The 400,000 sq. foot structure is built on an acre near the Washington Monument.
As written in the New York Times: “Understanding black history and culture is essential to understanding American history and culture.”
