In an audacious plan, a collaborative redevelopment team seeks to boost the riverfront Lathrop Homes public housing project on Chicago’s North Side by remaking it into a mixed-income riverfront community.
According to the Chicago Tribune, “Under the plan, developers would preserve 19 of 31 existing structures on the site, including a portion of the public housing units. It also would include new residential construction and retail development, and would open up access to the Chicago River.”
The plan was created with significant input from nonprofits Bickerdike Redevelopment and Heartland Housing and will go before Chicago’s Plan Commission on February 18. If things go as planned, the developers will get approval from City Council by March.
