Since 2005, the percentage of women on the boards of the United States’ largest companies has only gone from 15 to 20 percent, a pathetic 5 percent in an entire decade.
To combat these numbers, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) is gearing up to propose legislation that would “…require companies to share statistics on their boards’ gender composition in their proxies, disclose their strategies in place to improve those numbers, and direct the SEC to recommend strategies for increasing gender diversity,” writes the Washington Post.
Diversity advocates are thrilled at the push for this first-of-its-kind legislation. Serena Fong, Vice President of Government Affairs at the nonprofit Catalyst, told the Washington Post, “In general we’re thrilled, frankly, that she’s doing something.”
