The Seattle-based Washington Research Foundation recently donated $10 million to the University of Washington to help advance a new technique that uses stem cells to repair damaged human hearts. The grant, channeled to UW’s Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, will help UW researchers progress to the human-trial phase by 2019. The Washington Research Foundation’s previous grants to the university have been modest- totaling $31 million altogether to programs focused on clean energy and other STEM fields. The recent donation for the stem cell technique is the largest in the foundation’s history, but has the potential to make a huge impact- it may unlock new treatments for heart disease, the No. 1 killer in the United States and worldwide.
